Seismic Expansion Joint Covers

We understand the risks involved with adding new construction to old buildings. To prevent damage from seismic activity, Sawtooth provides the service of installing expansion joints and covers to keep buildings and occupants safe.

Why Are Expansion Joint Covers Necessary

Construction methods have evolved greatly over the past 50 years. New building are built to withstand natural disasters much more effectively than old buildings. Because of this, adding new additions to old construction can pose a great risk to the integrity of the building if an earthquake was to occur. Expansion joints create a separation between new and old, allowing both parts to shake and move in their own ways as needed. Covers over these joints hide the engineering underneath and provide the same airtight barrier that a regular addition would.

Expansion joint covers accommodates any type of building movement, including wind sway for tall buildings, building settlement for new to existing structures, seismic movement for earthquake-prone regions, and every-day thermal movement.

If your building is in an active seismic zone, you want to choose a cover that accommodates multi-directional movement.

In conditions where wind sway frequently causes movement greater than 1”, surface mounted plate systems for floors and rubber gasket systems for walls and ceilings are ideal because these types of systems do not disengage.
